Underage Football
Our Under 8 and Under 6 players travelled to St. Brigids Kiltoom on Sunday for a blitz which included Athlone, St. Brigids, and Barna (Galway).
Thanks to everyone who attended, it was great to see lots of great skills on display, great fun was had by all and thanks to our dedicated coaches who hold it all together.  Thanks again to St. Brigids for their hospitality and for hosting a great blitz.

U8 Boys Blitz - 21/4/2018 Pairc Chiarain

Future looks bright as Athlone U8’s excel in blitz.

On a beautiful sunny Saturday last, Pairc Chiarain Athlone was a host venue for the first of a number of U8 blitzes to be held throughout Westmeath in the coming months.  The format was 7/8 players a-side with ten minute-a-side games and the emphasis very much on participation and fun. Each team played three games.  Host club Athlone had three teams in action as had both Mullingar Shamrocks  and Lilliput Gaels while Kilbeggan Shamrocks (1 team) made up ten teams in total.

‘Mol an oige agus t-iocfaidh said’ is an old Irish proverb that sprang to mind while watching the 10 teams giving their all in the fifteen matches that took place. For many of the Athlone players this was their first taste of such a blitz having recently graduated from our nursery and to a man they took the step up in their stride.  Gaelic football like any sport or skill or art takes time and dedication to master but the performances of the three Athlone teams in action indicated that they are moving in the right direction. The importance of teamwork, honesty of effort, and the execution of the basic skills of the game are to the core of our training sessions each Sunday morning (11.30-12.30) in Pairc Chiarain and these were very much to the fore in each of the performances on Saturday.

The future stars from each of the clubs tired noticeably in the third and final game as the heat began to take its toll. Some well-deserved refreshments were on hand for all participants at the end of what was a very fruitful and enjoyable blitz. Thanks to all the Athlone GAA members who helped out with the smooth running of the tournament.

Training continued as normal on Sunday (11.30am-12.30pm) as it does every Sunday (except bank holiday weekends). New members (boys and girls of all ages from 4 up) always welcome and registration is free for the first year. Contact Joe Fallon (0868846731).
